Job Type Full-time

The primary focus for this role is to be a key and influential member of our London Market Infrastructure & DevOps Chapter with a focus on Site Reliability Engineering and offer dedicated support to our various Innovation squads as we create new "Cloud First" solutions to add value to the business

Within this role we would expect you to take on the below key responsibilities

  • Work with LM innovation squads helping to ensure our infrastructure in the Cloud is properly managed, secure and cost effective
  • Performing a traditional SRE role - with the goal of automating all things infrastructure - ensuring it is wholly scripted and deployed as part of an automated DevOps CI/CD pipeline with little or no human interaction - making good use of existing tools like Azure DevOps, Puppet, Docker, YAML and Terraform
  • Ensuring our production and dev/test environments are secure, performant, scalable, consistent (through scripting) and monitored accordingly - so we can take proactive steps towards improving all of these aspects over time and are fully aware of existing issues
  • Ensuring our cloud environments are secure and safe - setting up and making sure Private and Public subnets are appropriately and cost effectively secured
  • Supporting squad engineers with the design and architecture of the overall solution - ensuring infrastructure is a key part of the overall consideration
  • Actively participating in incident management, problem resolution and root cause analysis scenarios
  • On a day to day basis, working alongside engineers - pairing and collaborating as necessary. Working in an Agile manner and within sprints - focused on specific cloud solutions
  • Helping engineers to also grow their knowledge of SRE techniques - especially around Container and Terraform usage / state management - allowing them to self-serve as much as possible
  • Working closely with the other LM Infrastructure & DevOps chapter members to agree on best practices around how we use our cloud subscriptions - ensuring resources are properly tagged, conventionally named, and monitored for performance, security and cost
  • Knowledge sharing and collaborating with the wider Hiscox SRE and Cloud Infrastructure team members - to share failures, successes and best practices
  • Ensuring we tear down PoC/Spike resources when no longer required to keep on top of spend. Regularly looking at the cost explorer for this purpose - ensuring squad engineers do the same
  • Ensuring we have a pathway to multi-cloud tenancy - with a view to always securely use the best cloud provider for the solution. Although Hiscox only supports Azure today - we need to have an awareness of what AWS and GCP can offer too - and keep up to date with this fast-moving tech space

Ideally, you will have:

  • Experience of working as an engineer, working on solutions in the cloud (Azure, AWS or GCP) or hybrid
  • Previous experience of application support and operations - understanding how to troubleshoot system issues and find a pragmatic solution in a timely manner
  • To have a strong desire for continuous improvement and an Agile way of working
  • Have the intellect and gravitas to influence and gain credibility with Hiscox IT and Business personnel and management
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of working with people at all levels within and external to the business. Able to convey ideas and information clearly and in a manner appropriate to all levels of audiences
  • Creative, proactive, logical and innovative - you do not accept the status quo - and will push hard for innovation and automation
  • Highly results driven, with the energy and determination to succeed in a very fast paced environment where the pace of response is critical to success
  • Works well in cross-functional groups with peers, subordinates and seniors, encourages participation and involvement of team members through being open and approachable

At Hiscox we care about our people. We hire the best people for the job and we're committed to diversity and creating a truly inclusive culture, which we believe drives success.

We have also learned over the past 15 months that working life doesn't always have to be in the office, and when it's safe to do so, we will be introducing hybrid ways of working to encourage a healthy work life balance.

We anticipate the successful candidate for this role will be in the office 3 days every 2 weeks

We see it as the best of both worlds: structure and sociability on one hand, and independence and flexibility on the other.
